The ocean was fishable again in Friday, but a big swell resulted in a rough surf. The best news was from the Golden Eagle out of Belmar, which reported a hot bite of blues from 8 to 15 pounds on jigs. There were also lots of blues for surfcasters at Seaside Park and Island Beach State Park -- though those are small blues that hit consistently on mullet while also taking metal and poppers at times. Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park also had a very encouraging report from a surfcaster who caught five stripers on poppers. A 29-inch bass was caught on bunker "up the street" from the shop.  I took a look at the Bay Head surf in the morning, and it still didn't look suitable for light tackle at low tide.  Instead, I tried Sea Girt after high tide in the afternoon, and did nothing with metal into fishable surf -- though another angler released a 25-inch bass. I had also cast there the previous afternoon when it was rougher but a little 9-inch fluke hit my Tsunami Slimwave metal.  Capt. Hans Kaspersetz trolled Shrewsbury Rocks with his Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands, but had no hits in a very large swell. Capt. Dave De Gennaro is moving his Hi-Flier from Barnegat to Manasquan on Saturday to get ready for the fall striper run to the north.
