It doesn't take much to please me when it comes to stripers in the surf, and the fat 22-incher that hit my Tactical Anglers Bomb Jr. popper just before I left the beach at 8 a.m. was a welcome sight  -- the first I've seen in the surf since June 23. Once again I was at Sea Girt, with that choice based on getting away from the massive weed north of Manasquan Inlet. The water was clear, but a large swell was breaking on the outer bar. There was no sign of the mullet run that's due around now, and could greatly improve surf fishing. I also picked up two snappers, one on a teaser and the other on the relatively large popper. Hudson Canyon has been hot lately, with bigeyes hitting both on the troll and at night along with yellowfin tuna. The Canyon Runner from Point Pleasant has an opening for a single angler on Wednesday for an overnighter on the Viking 48. The price of $940 covers everything. Call Adam La Rosa at 732 272-4445. Capt. Stan Zagleski said this morning's fluking on his Elaine B. II from Highlands started slowly with no drift, but ended up producing several limits plus lots of 17-to-17 1/2-inchers.  Dr. George Gabuzda of Wall made a short trip for fluke with his son Jack on their All Hands from Hoffman's Marina in Brielle. Only shorts were hooked except for a fish Gabuzda couldn't move. That turned out to be a sting ray of about 20 pounds that was carefully released.
