Surfcasting returned to normal today with a calmer surf and some fish life. Joe Melillo, at Castaway's Tackle in Point Pleasant, said a couple of anglers working the local beaches with metal caught cocktail blues, hickory shad and a fluke. Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park reported fluking in the surf has been very good since it calmed yesterday -- when some limits were caught. Frank Stone caught eight fluke up to 2 1/2 pounds on Gulp today, and Joe Benheim of North Plainfield landed a 5 1/4-pounder at 9th Ave. in Seaside Park on Gulp. Capt. Stan Zagleski had another good day of fluking on his Elaine B II from Highlands. Tom Hollywood Sr. of Staten Island had a limit, and Mike Scher from Cranford  bagged four up to the 6 5/16-pound pool winner. Rider Heckman (7) of Whitehall Pa. was proud of his biggest ever 5 3/16-pound fluke. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant had a pick of small blues with a few bonito this morning before it dropped off around 11. Then there was a good shot of mackerel along with some bonito, blues -- and a dolphin. Dave Lilly of Hazlet fished a Staten Island fluke tournament with Charlie Parker of Oceanport, and had a first day 8.95-pounder that fell just behind the 9.05-pound leader. He'll be looking to add those few more ounces on Sunday. Capt. John Kolias ran a noon trip Friday with his Reel Fun from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands for his son Chris with his college buddies. Ambrose Channel was hot again as even the novice anglers caught fluke up to over 5 pounds. Capt. Lou Grazioso of Wall said the yellowfin and bigeye bite continues in Hudson Canyon. He fished Friday with Bib Cervanak on Lady Dorado from Waretown as they tried daytime chunking that didn't produce until the sun started going down. Then they had several yellowfins in the 70-pound class on, with all but two getting off in the confusion.
