Though there have been signs that the unprecedented mid-summer run of large striped bass in Raritan Bay may be dying out, there was still good fishing today for those who stuck it out. Jerry McMenamy of Holmdel fished alone from his own boat this morning, and set up in just the right spot because he was busy catching bass while others watched. However, Gene Graman of Middletown stuck it out and kept chunking as we ended up catching eight stripers. Anna Maria Steppy of Big Pine Key, Fl. (originally from Garfield) hooked a  29-inch bass to get us started before adding two big stripers when our chunking finally drew some to That's It from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands. My last bass almost cleaned out a Shimano spinning outfit , and turned out to be a 33-pounder -- proving that some of those very large for the summer bass are still in the bay. Joe Greco of Fort Myers, Fl. (originally from Edison) performed a valuable service by hooking most of the smooth dogfish that would have prevented us from catching the bass.   Capt. Stan Zagleski had a decent day of fluking in the bay from his Elaine B. II out of Bahrs in Highlands. The best action was early in the morning, and catches ran up to three and four keepers with many in the 4-to-6-pound class. Don Jaeger of Morris Plains had three to 6 and 6 1/8 pounds to win the pool. Jack Decker from Blairstown also bagged a 6-pounder.
