1000's of NJ Saltwater Fishing Reports, Dozens of Sources, Maps, Wrecks, Historical Search

Though Arthur was a dud, it did bring in the warm water I predicted. That's all I can say about my morning surfcasting at Point Pleasant. Most of the seaweed was gone also, but I couldn't raise anything on a popper -- and an attempt at working Gulp for fluke was equally unsuccessful. Unfortunately, the warm water may also not last long because the forecast is once again for gusty southwest winds which create upwelling of cold bottom waters along the Shore. Capt. Stan Zagleski reported another day of decent fluking from his Elaine B II out of Highlands that was very similar to yesterday. A good start produced some large fluke before the drift was lost. Jim Lohse of Union almost immediately boated a 7 13/16-pound fluke that won the pool -- and he added a 5 7/8-pounder. Tony Satus of Old Bridge bagged three up to 6 13/16 and 4 1/2 pounds. Bill Yu from Palisades Park had three to 5 7/16 pounds. Zagleski said bucktails and Gulp were more effective than natural baits.  Bluefish jigging didn't hold up. Capt. Dave Riback, of the Queen Mary from Point Pleasant, said it looked promising yesterday, but only the most skilled seemed to catch them today. Bob Gieson was high hook with three, but many were lost  by other anglers. At Seaside Park, Betty & Nick's reported 64 degrees in the surf, and a 5 3/4-pound fluke caught by Al Nichol of Berkeley. Grumpy's Tackle weighed two stripers Saturday. Kevin Elton beached a 30-inch, 11.7-pounder on a spoon, and Tom Spazzano had a 36-inch, 16.66-pound bass on clam.  Capt. Jim McFarland said John Policari of Manalapan wanted haddock on Saturday, so he put Big Mac from Green Harbor, Ma, into them up to 10 pounds while adding 40 cod plus some cusk.
