Capt. Stan Zagleski continues to put his regulars on Elaine B II from Bahrs in Highlands into some quality fluke every day. There was an unusual three-way tie for the pool today at 6 1/16 pounds between Ron Krempecke of Allentown N.J., Greg Barnett from Trenton, and Tony Salomone of Woodbridge -- while Dennis O'Brien from South Bound Brook managed a limit. The Golden Eagle from Belmar is still having a hard time finding bluefish, but filled in with a catch of sea bass, ling and flounder. Gene Graman of Middletown put Joe Greco Jr, and his son Matt from Pa. into five stripers from 22 to 34 pounds while chunking at the mouth of Raritan Bay on Friday from among lots of dogfish. John Olson, who built Graman's That's It from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands, was aboard the next morning when they got only one 14-pound bass among the dogfish. Capt. Joe Massa ran his My Three Sons from Morgan Marina to Coney Island on Sunday to catch four legal fluke, but couldn't find bunkers to give stripers a try back in the bay. He saw the Brooklyn from Sheepshead Bay trying to jig blues in the back of the bay. Dave Lilly of Hazlet said fluking was very tough everywhere on Sunday due to the south wind that was against the current -- which made for almost impossible drifting conditions. He picked up a few keepers to just over 7 pounds plus a few shorts -- and saw a very large sea turtle. Capt. John Kolias said there was some improvement in fluking Saturday from his Reel Fun out of Twin Lights. The Jesse Palafox party had a pick that included 4-and-6-pound fluke from among dogfish plus a few shorts and sea robins. Surfcasting in the Point Pleasant area has been almost impossible lately due to lots of broken-up seaweed in the water, but that seems to be less of a problem much further south. Though fishing for blues and fluke has been spotty, Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reported sharks were caught there Saturday evening. Allen Riley of South Plainfield and his crew tried Sandy Hook this morning, but were discouraged by a lack of water and the large area placed off limits by the Park Service to protect piping plovers. They switched to Monmouth Beach, but couldn't even get a hit from a fluke or sea robin there. Capt. Jim McFarland, of Big Mac from Green Harbor, Ma. said fishing was picky Sunday at the Wildcat for Carl Mauer party from Pompton Plains, but they managed some cod, pollock, haddock and redfish.
