Chuck Many of Annandale was looking for quality rather than quantity today with his Ty Man from Gateway Marina in Highlands. Therefore, he headed out into the ocean to look for a big striper. Unfortunately. the big bass never hit, and that fishing was a tough pick as Nellie Greer of Bethlehem, Pa. and local bass pro Matt Calabria joined Many and I in releasing five stripers. That's a very tough day by Ty Man standards but, at least, four of the bass ranged from 31 to 34 pounds. My bass was the smallest of the lot -- estimated by Many at 27 pounds. Except for Greer's striper during the afternoon in deep waters, the action was in the evening off Elberon -- where there had been a good bite the previous afternoon.      Many and Calabria also jigged for fluke as we worked the striper grounds, and caught lots of short fluke plus dogfish. They ended up with four keeper fluke and three sea bass. Many also hooked the boat's first sea robin of the season. While I plugged a small blue on a Tactical  Anglers Bomb popper earlier in the day, I never got a chance to cast a popper into a hoped-for blow-up of bass on bunkers during late afternoon.. The only blow-up we saw was created by a thresher shark.  Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina reports fishing for fluke in the river continues to be good, with plenty of action and enough keepers to keep interest  high. Sallie Balog from Tarentum Pa. had a 4lb 8oz fluke from a rental boat and several near keepers this week.  The offshore boats out of Belmar had a good weekend of fluke fishing with some fish over 7 lb. Charles Wardell of Wall had four bass this morning, all over 30 pounds. He kept one 33-pound fish. All the action was off Long Branch. Bill Renner, of Belmar, had 3 bass to 33 inches on clam in the Belmar surf. Joe Tomaszewski, owner of Tuna Tales out of Belmar Marina had 14 cod to 34 pounds and 8 blue sharks to an estimated 150 pounds. He fished with Darren Stiles and Joe Tilton. Allen Riley of South Plainfield reported the Monmouth Beach surf was clear and calm early this morning, but there were few fish. Ed Eiley of Edison caught a sea robin on metal, and Lou Vargas of Fanwood hooked a 3-pound bluefish on a Hopkins Shorty.
