If this weekend's results are any indication, there should be some great mako shark fishing coming up next weekend in the Shore's biggest shark tournament -- Mako Mania. The biggest Long Island shark tournament is the Freeport Hudson Anglers Shark Tournament which was contested yesterday for the 42nd time. I started sharking out of Jones Inlet long before that contest got started, but it's come a long way since then. Everything counts there, and the big shark is almost always a thresher -- a species we never saw in the old days. Reel Games took the top prize of $159,852  (including Calcuttas)  with a 542.6-pound thresher -- edging out A Fish Scent with a 501-pounder. More impressive from our point of view were the makos that won the next three spots as they weighed 403.6, 294.4, and 292.8 pounds. The annual Brett Bailey Memorial Mako Tournament, out of Hoffman's Marina in Brielle, drew 59 boats as Hard to Catch won about 36,000 for a 243-pound mako. Only five makos were weighed, but others were probably released or not weighed in once the size of the biggest was known for the single prize. The other award, for the largest thresher, went to Mary Lou Crew-- which had a military member  from Team Red, White & Blue as part of its crew. Fourteen servicemen were aboard boats entered in the contest. The Greater Point Pleasant Charter Boat Association's 29th anniversary Mako Mania is expected to award over $150,000 in prize money when it's contested out of Crystal Point Yacht Club in Point Pleasant. The captains meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Manasquan River Club -- with fishing Saturday and Sunday. For information call 732 892-3666, or visit gppcba.com.
