Though I've received no such information from the state as yet, Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park has posted on their web site that the special 16-inch exemption for Island Beach State Park is in effect. Anglers there can keep up to two 16-inch fluke, which can be checked in at a station about a mile south of the gate house where they an be tagged as legal.   Geumpy's weighed a 7.75-pound blue for Jacob Mossbanks (9), and a 40-inch, 23.15-pound striper for Craig Napolitano. Blues on bunker remain the best bet in the surf, along with small fluke. Capt. Russ Binns fished Barnegat Bay earlier in the week with his Mar-Lin from Toms River, and had fine popping for small blues near the Seaside Bridge. He said he's never seen them thicker, and noted they were spitting up quantities of tiny fluke. Capt. Stan Zagleski said fluking was a slow pick everywhere he fished with Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands today. There were some shorts, and not enough keepers up to 5 pounds, though some fares caught more than one. There was still some swell on the ocean, and fishing there wasn't what it had been early in the week. The Golden Eagle from Belmar got back into blues, though it was a tough pick. They did add two stripers in the 30-to-35-pound class. Everything was on Run-Off hammered jigs and Crocs.  Capt. Hans Kaspersetz got Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands back in action with new 300-hp Yamaha outboards, but we zigged when we should have zagged. The George Riesco  party from Wall worked hard dueing the mid-morning half-day trip, but the bass that were marked down the beach didn't respond to bunker when we anchored with wind against tide as only two smooth dogfish were caught before a move to the Rocks. A bass was lost there when a new major brand 7/0 circle hook broke. What are the odds of that happening? Then we got a call about a bite back where we started, but only got there in time to watch the other boat catch their last striper before the bite turned off despite perfect conditions with wind and current together. Mother told me there would be days like that! Steve Remotti fished his SS Bapa out of Morgan Marina at anchor around Old Orchard for lots of big blues and a 23-pound striper. Capt. Joe Massa anchored in the back of the bay to pick though bluefish to get a bass on bunker from his My Three Sons out of Morgan Marina. Allen Riley of South Plainfield e-mailed a shot of Greg Bazsa with a 25-pound striper he released in the back of the bay while keeping a couple of others. Capt. Jim McFarland had the Joe Bajer party from North Brunswick aboard Big Mac from Green Harbor, Ma. as they caught haddock, cusk and redfish before adding 50 cod in an hour.
