With several days of strong winds in the forecast, the best bet for catching a fish may be with feet planted firmly on shore at Point Pleasant Canal. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, says flounder fishing with bloodworms has been good at both ends as well as in the canal -- and blackfish are also hitting the same baits with some keepers included. Small stripers may be mixed in, but the few regulars who have been keeping stripers honest with lures both there and in the surf still haven't done anything. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, says flounder fishing has turned on in Shark River, as well as in Manasquan River. The Polar Bear Tournament at Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park is coming to an end tomorrow without a single entry. Any keeper bass from the surf could win it. Grumpy's also notes that bass are in the bay -- and they've heard rumors that 3-to-5-pound blues have also moved in. Capt. Rob Semkewyc was discouraged by the relative lack of Raritan Bay stripers over the weekend, and will wait until Friday to make the next trip with his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands. Coast Boating School has scheduled the following boating safety classes leading to the required boating permit.
