The hard northwester set up boaters with both a calm sea and hot fishing as it backed off today. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported a boat limit of stripers up to 22 pounds. The Golden Eagle from Belmar had a boat limit up to 21 pounds, with large Run-Off gold jigs being most effective.. The Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands got into loads of short stripers but few keepers until Capt. Rob Semkewyc ran through lots of bird action to a spot that had large fish. He jigged bass of 22 and 17 pounds himself, and the pool went to a 29-pounder. The surf was calm and clear, bu\t initial results weren't good. At Seaside Park, Grumpy's Tackle only had six weigh-ins in Sunday's fierce winds, and none this morning. Betty & Nick's reported there was a bite Sunday afternoon in the south end of the park. I checked Bay Head this morning and talked to one angler who had braved the bitter cold to release two legal stripers on a needlefish plug before daylight despite the shallow waters due to a low tide and and the northwest wind that blows water off the beach. I returned around noon when the water was up,and only needed my Tsunami Marlin boat boots to walk the calm surf, but the water was crystal clear and with no bait showing it didn't look promising. Another attempt in late afternoon was also unsuccessful in very low waters with no sign of the small sand eels that had been there at dawn. It would be a good idea to fish tomorrow morning as rain and gale warnings are in the forecast for Tuesday night.
