FLUKE LIKE A CHAMPION!!!
Wednesday, September 17th
Location: Raritan Bay
Tide: Low 9:20am
Water Temp: 69.7 Degrees
Wind: NE 4kts
Moon Phase: 37% Waning
Morning observations:
- There is a good vibe on the boat this morning. After having mild success on Monday, most anglers feel that today will be the breakout day we have been waiting for.
- Bill Reid gave the Spro which produce not one, but two 8 pound fluke in two trip to Laura Berg for luck. Can the same magical Spro bottle up a little something once again?
- I had a conversation with Paul Alesi on the way out this morning and he spoke about changing his tactic to something that he has observed over the last two trips. We will see if it pays off.
- The conditions will be optimal for the area we will be fishing.
- Three Flukemasters on board; Walter Petka, George Doll and 5 Time Champ Steve Kerry.
What I’m watching: We have landed more than a few beasts this month, and I have a feeling that there will be another one coming up today.
They said it: “I’m Back!!!!†— Captain Chaos on returning after a little sabbatical.
September Flukemaster Classic
Bill Reid, who on Friday landed the largest fluke of his life, weighing 8lb 1 oz., only two ounces short of the leader which was caught earlier that same day. On Monday Bill came back and not only beat his personal best, but took down the monthly leader with an 8 pound 12 ounce fluke.
Leader: Bill Reid
Weight: 8lb 12oz
Pot: $870.00

First Drift: Wow! What a start!! Terrific keeper ratio and more than a have dozen fish over 4 pounds. Nice!!!
- Paul Alesi and Roy both put 2 fishing in their coolers.
- Capt Choas wasted no time putting a keeper in his cooler.
- The conditions are very good. The jig guys had to bumb up to 6 oz Spros, and bait draggers are using the same. Mono line is holding with 8’s.
Second Drift: We could not recapture the magic of the first one.
Third Drift: No good. We are going to change up the area.
Fourth Drift: Not good again.
- Our first drift of the day was the best. We caught the last of the outgoing water and had the change of tide bite. Since the flood current started to run, the fishing has shut down and it has become tough to get bites.
- We are going to change it up completely and head out toward Sandy Hook Channel.
Fifth Drift: BOOM BOOM POW!!!!!!!!
Another beast is landed!!!!
John Warchal just landed a 9lb 2 oz fluke!!!!
- We made a L O N G drift and had shots of fish every now and then. It wasn’t great, but not bad either.
- Paul Alesi scored his 4th keeper weighing close to 6 pounds. We are beginning to hear MVP whispers.
- There were a few very nice fish caught.
The capture of Paul Alesi’s 6 pound fluke.
Sixth Drift: We finished with a few fish coming over the rail.
Postgame: Another big fish! We have been on some tear with the so called “Doormatsâ€Â. This time it was John Warchal who was the angler on the other end of the line, reeling in the beast. This one weighed 9 pounds 2 ounces and was caught using spearing. John was not in the monthly pool, so Bill Reid lives to see another day.
We had some up’s and down’s today. There was the first drift where it looked as if we were going to have a banner day, but then came the tide change, and it shut everything down. There was a whole lot of nothing caught for a while, and then we started to pick a few. Then came the second to last drift when we had a few very good shots of fish. All in all, the best way to describe the day was inconsistent. The good news is we caught the fluke very well to begin the day, and it was in the bay. Hopefully tomorrow gives us a better look at what’s to come for the final week of the season. I believe we are in store for a good finish.
Paul Alesi may have sealed the deal for MVP with a 4 keeper performance. His largest fish came in just under 6 pounds.
See you tomorrow!
