We sat at the dock for 9 days watching northeast winds blow and waiting for the weather to change. It has changed and it looks like summer has come. And we are finally back out fishing - and the fish are here - big time.
Capt. Deane Lambros has the James Smith group out who won the trip that I donated at the Hope For Children's Foundation (www.hfch.org) winter gala a year back. I guess good karma has it's ways as they had a heck of a trip. Trolling for only 6 hours on Wednesday they caught close to 30 yellowfin with half nice fish they boxed up and the others on the smaller side they released.
With enough yellowfin in the box they went big-eye hunting and they found their target. Trolling 6 Canyon Runner Spreader Bars, Canyon Runner Dredges, several Joe Shutes with ballys and a few Melton Cherry Jets they had the fish up around 730pm and put a nice 71" 210 pound big-eye in the boat. Not to stop there they trolled another 20 minutes and nailed a second one - 73" and 240 pounds! Joe Shutes will bally were deadly as usual - trolled right alongside the dredges and bars.
Deane's charter was done and went home early.
Capt. Phil Dulanie arrived late on the 60 Ritchie and missed the yellowfin bite but picked a few small ones and released a bunch of sharks at night including a small mako. But not to be completed out done they hung in there and nailed their own big-eye. This one came on a Canyon Runner Yellowfin Runner lure (the manufacturer of the heads happened to be on the boat today) and is around 150 pounds.
Looks like there are plenty of fish around so don't delay in trying to get out there - there is no guarantee this type of fishing lasts all year.
Finally - I have only 1 spot left in our Canyon Runner Fishing Report Service for any New Jersey boats - please do not hesitate to call me ASAP if you want in.
