1000's of NJ Saltwater Fishing Reports, Dozens of Sources, Maps, Wrecks, Historical Search

The Ocean Explorer from Belmar reported there were huge swells on the ocean Monday, but they're planning to head offshore for cod on Wednesday. Light SE and then west winds are predicted for Wednesday and Thursday -- along with mild temperatures. Dogfish dominated Sunday's fishing in good weather as only one legal cod was caught along with a pollock and a ling -- though some big out-of-season blackfish were released. Bob Mathews rented a skiff Saturday at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina. The anglers chummed and did catch a flounder while losing another. Matthews also finally heard of a flounder being caught casting from the docks.  Tom Paglioroli reported that South Jersey anglers are catching some school stripers, including an occasional keeper, at the traditional early season hot spot -- Graveling Point. The Salt Water Anglers of Bergen County are holding their annual Past President's Dinner tonight at Mountainside Inn , 509 Hazel St., Clifton. Anyone wishing to purchase a ticket for this 7 p.m. event, which I'm attending, can call John Toth at 732 656-0139. A meeting on the proposed Sandy Hook Bay National Marine Sanctuary will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Red Bank Library at 84 Front St. The Recreational Fishing Alliance opposes what Jim Donofrio calls "a solution looking for a problem". This proposal would involve 12,500 acres that also includes the Shrewsbury, Navesink and Swimming rivers plus part of Raritan Bay. I'll have more about the potential problems involved with this proposal in tomorrow's blog.
