It's not often that NOAA Fisheries has good news for bluefin tuna anglers, but today was the exception as new rules for this season allow more boated fish in a very expensive fishery. Angling Category boats will be allowed two 27-to less than 47-inch bluefins plus one more from 47 to less than 73 inches. In the Charter and Head Boat category the rules are the same except that three of the 27 to less than 47-inchers are allowed. These regulations become effective April 23 and extend to Dec. 31. Capt. Vinny Vetere of Katfish Charters in Great Kills said weekend striper fishing was very good, but Tuesday was a dud in windy weather as only spiny dogfish and skates were caught on four drops. Art Berkman of Pompton Plains reports stripers were hitting live bunkers in the back of the bay today as he fished with Johnny Bucktails on his Sea Hunter out of Keyport. Capt. Scotty Hilliard reported 14 anglers on his Prowler 5 from Atlantic Highlands caught 10 keeper stripers plus 40 shorts while jigging plastic shads Sunday. He adds 3:30 to 9:30 p.m. trips on Saturday and Sunday. The Elaine B. from Bahrs in Highlands switches to blackfishing at 7 a.m. Saturday, and continues until the season ends on April 30. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, reports party boats are doing well with blackfish. Fluke are already in Shark River, well before the season starts. There are some stripers in the surf, but Raritan Bay is the spot for larger bass -- most of which are breeders that should be released. Dave Perruso reports the 6th annual Bi-State Shah Fishing Contest is up to 322 entries before it opens Thursday in the Easton-Phillipsburg area on the Delaware River.
