The combination of hard SW winds and continued poor ocean striper fishing has led to party boat cancellations the next two days. The Jamaica from Brielle found only one blue near the inlet today, and Steven Webber won the pool with that 8-pounder, The Jamaica will not sail on Tuesday due to the wind. The Golden Eagle from Belmar also came up with only one blue today despite all the ocean readings. They have cancelled the next two days, as has the Cock Robin from Point Pleasant. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park emphasizes the big blues on poppers in the bay. The only weigh-in today was a 32.5-inch, 9.45-pound blue on bunker by Bryan Walthrop. Chuck Many of Annandale managed to find nine stripers for release on his Ty Man from Gateway Marina in Highlands today after Nellie Greer of Bethlehem, Pa. loaded the boat with bunkers in one throw of his cast net. No one seemed to be doing much in the mouth of the bay, where fishing had been good, and the only bass on a live bunker was just a 32-incher I hooked. Yet, we later chunked in the river on the outgoing tide to bring the release count up to nine bass from 30 inches to over 20 pounds. That was just a fraction of what Many and Greer had released early in the week, and Many suspects those bass  (which were bursting with eggs) may have headed further up the Hudson to prepare for the May spawning.
