The sea bass season opens its first phase on Monday with a 10-fish limit at a 12 1/2-inch minimum through June 19. Fluke fishing is off to a decent start in Raritan and Sandy Hook bays. Capt. Stan Zagleski said the weather forecast scared off most customers from Elaine B II out of Bahrs in Highlands, but the showers ended by sailing time. There was a lack of drift, but still a fair pick as Tony Status of Old Bridge managed an early limit -- the boat's first of the season. The Prowler 5 from Atlantic Highlands also did well with fluke up to about 6 pounds today. The Saturday evening trip sailed into good weather despite a weather forecast to the contrary. They caught lots of big blues. Also at that port, the Fishermen got off to a slow start with bluefish this morning due to a big swell and a lack of current. Capt. Ron Santee said it seemed to take forever for a current to develop, and it wasn't until 11 a.m. that they were able to drift baits correctly and start catching the big blues that had been easy to come by. The pool winner was 15 pounds. Bob Matthews reports from Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina that some stripers are being caught in the surf. Scotty Pullen had a 19-pounder, and Thomas Cook a 17-pound bass.  The Jamaica from Brielle reported fine bluefish jigging on Saturday, topped by a 12.5-pounder for Jesse Reiser from Roseland. That boat has a special Sea Bass Marathon on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations. The visitation for Jimmy Morenz will be on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Shore Point Funeral Home, 3269 Rt. 35 N in Hazlet. Morenz (57), who had been working at Julian's Tackle in Atlantic Highlands, was one of the finest fishermen I've ever encountered and former skipper of Miss Take 2 from Highlands. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park announced there will be a memorial service for Poneytail Mike Malek on June 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Italian-American Club at 308 Hamilton Ave in Seaside Heights. Dress will be informal.
