There haven't been many large fluke reported so far this season, but there were two caught Saturday in Raritan Bay from Elaine B. II out of Bahrs in Highlands. Cheryl Gaffney of Roselle Park boated an 8 1/8-pounder that barely edged the 7 13/16-pounder hooked by Brad Weaver from Bound Brook. Though there was a lot more boat traffic than he's been seeing, Capt. Stan Zagleski said it was a nice day with a decent pick of keepers and shorts. Bluefish continued to cooperate in the bay, and both the Fishermen and Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands reported plenty of big blues for all despite the fact that most were hooked on rental rods by people not used to fighting such large fish. Scott Leadbeater from Haddon Heights fished his center console out of Atlantic Highlands in the back of the bay Friday afternoon, but it was all blues -- and the south wind that came up made for a rough trip back. The ocean blues also continued to cooperate, though the Golden Eagle from Belmar noted that boat traffic made it harder to stay with the 6-to-15-pounders that hit Run-Off Crocs and hammered jigs. The Jamaica from Brielle reported good Friday jigging topped by a 16-pounder for Dave Angstadd. There may be some openings on Sunday's limited Magic Hours livelineing trip Surf reports from the tackle shops in Seaside Park are still about big blues primarily on bait, but with more stripers added to the mix. Grumpy's weighed a 41.5-inch, 24.4-pounder caught on metal by Allan Kunze. Bunker spoons continue to produce for trollers. Roger Tucker weighed a 49-inch, 47.9-pounder Saturday. Tom and Kyle Fratesi had almost identical snag & drop 45-inch stripers on Friday as Tom's weighed 33.4 pounds -- and Kyle's was a half-pound heavier. I cast a pencil popper briefly this morning at Bay Head without raising anything or even seeing another surfcaster. However, Joe Melillo got word of a 30-inch bass released on a plug from a customer at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant who saw it caught just a bit further south.
