Capt. Stan Zagleski, who had an exceptional run of doormat fluke on his Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands two years ago, got started early this season when he netted the first party boat doormat reported to this blog on Monday. Veteran angler Dennis O'Brien of South Bound Brook hooked the 10-ound, 13-ounce trophy. Capt. Ron Santee got off to a good start on his first fluke trip of the season with the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands on Monday as Nate Chudy of Flemington took the seasonal pool lead right away with a 6 1/2-pound fluke, while Elisa Arnoldy of Hopatcong had the first limit out of seven legal fluke.  That big pool lead didn't last a day as Dave Bachovchin boated an 8 1/2-pounder on Tuesday as Santee had to wait out early conditions before getting a productive wind with tide drift for good action. The Monday night striper trip produced 10 legal bass plus shorts on fresh bunker. The Sea Hunter from that port found some blues this morning before getting into a bunker school where the fares missed several large bass before Capt. Rob Semkewyc  started casting shads . They ended up with linesiders of 37, 24 and 15 pounds on those lures. He'll be looking for blues and bass by jigging tomorrow, but will be trying livelining again on Friday if enough anglers call to express interest. Capt. Hans Kaspersetz took his former Presidential Billfish Tournament partner Ed Arnold of Dallas out for stripers Monday afternoon on Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands. Arnold was also a  fellow member of the Freeport Tuna Club when he and I both lived on Long Island many decades ago. The afternoon bite has been after 4 p.m., and Arnold got a hit on a live bunker off Long Branch not long after that. At 77, Arnold isn't any longer in tournament shape, and couldn't put much pressure on the fish with a light drag on a baitcasting reel, and the light rod wasn't even bent -- so I thought it was a small bass or blue running slowly on the surface. Therefore, it was a surprise when Kaspersetz slipped the net under a 45-inch bass that had to be in the mid-thirties to 40 pounds. Yet, it turned out to be quite an effort for Kaspersetz to get it swimming again for the release. Arnold fell during that procedure, and was bruised badly, so Kaspersetz headed back with the sun still well above the horizon. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported decent action with 6-to-15-pound blues today. The Canyon Runner from Clarks Landing in Point Pleasant boated a 367-pound mako shark during the weekend Warriors for Warriors Shark Tournament, but that great catch was toppled when Tra Sea Ann brought in a 430-pounder. That mako also won the Brett Bailey Mako Rodeo at Hoffman's in Brielle where it weighed 428 pounds.  I'm still trying to get official results from those contests and the South Jersey Shark Tournament. The Jim's Tackle Shark Tournament in Cape May was won by Fully Loaded with a 194-pound mako, followed by Let's Go at 178 pounds. There'll be more about the weekend shark and tuna fishing in tomorrow's blog. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills once again caught a striper on a sand flea at Spring Lake this morning, but it was a short. He also beached a 20-inch fluke. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reports that most of the action lately has been at the south end of Island Beach State Park. Vinny Talazzolo brought in a 38-inch bass on Tuesday that weighed 15.1 pounds after hitting a clam. Gertrude Lierena beached a 14.65-pound black drum. The Pedrone's each bunker-spooned a large striper Monday, with John's 44-incher weighing 34.25 pounds while Anthony's 48-incher went 42.6 pounds.
