1000's of NJ Saltwater Fishing Reports, Dozens of Sources, Maps, Wrecks, Historical Search

A lot of news came to my attention after I wrote last night's column and blog. Instead of seeking the elusive mackerel, the Golden Eagle will be sailing daily from Belmar for striped bass after getting word of some action on that species. Presumably, that's in the ocean under gannets -- but there are also lots of bass in the back of Raritan Bay. Capt. Lou Grazioso of Wall took Shimano reps Dick and Greg Kondak out of Keyport on a Boston Whaler to seek some of the big winter flounder that have been caught in small numbers by bay anglers. They didn't find them Wednesday morning, and no bass were attracted to the clam chum. Yet, when Grazioso moved to the Morgan flats that morning he saw bass swirling and they limited out by casting Tsunami shads. The bass were on herring, and trollers were scoring on the warmer outgoing tide. When Grazioso returned on the cooler  flood that afternoon, the bait was still there -- but there was no response from stripers. Blackfish will be the weekend attraction for most of the fleet. Bluefish could be close behind, and The Fishing Line reported a 10-pounder had been caught in the Great Kills area.
