Conditions couldn't have been better today for offshore bottom fishing out of Belmar. The Ocean Explorer reported calm seas with only a sprinkle and no rain. They had one limit of blackfish, while some other anglers managed one or two keepers among the shorts. The Big Mohawk reported several limits. Similar conditions are expected Wednesday, and those seeking winter tog should take advantage of those unusually good conditions. he Canyon Runner seminar at Atlantic City on Jan. 28 is almost entirely sold out. Call Adam La Rosa at 732 842-685 for one of the last few tickets. It was a lot calmer off the Shore today than than at Islamorada in the Florida Keys, where a southeast wind has had the seas rolling recently. Yet, sailfishing had been good Monday, and it was quite fishable for Capt. Scott Stanczyk on Catch 22 from Bud N' Mary's Marina. I was aboard to shoot the action as Richard Stanczyk's girl friend, Joanne Aromando, and Darryl Choronzey of Ontario, Canada fished the Over the Hill Sailfish Tournament. The mates castnetted plenty of balao and pilchards on the way out, and worked the kites all day for perfect presentations. Unfortunately, there wasn't much action and the sails were very small -- making them difficult to hook on the balao they preferred. Joanne released two sails, and Darryl pulled the hook on another close to the boat. They each also released a large little tunny -- "bonita" in the south. We weren't far back with just two, as the winning boat only had five releases, and three took second.    The last time I was aboard Catch 22, we caught three swordfish up to 200 pounds in the daylight, plus dolphin and blackfin tuna. Capt. Scott Stanczyk can be contacted at 800 742-7945.

Posted on April 18, 2020 July ICAST fishing tackle show cancelled Conditions are slowly improving with the pandemic, but there are still few fishing reports, and the annual fishing tackle show which introduces new tackle to the fishing trade has been cancelled. The annual ICAST event of the American Sportfishing Association was to be held July 14-17 in Orlando, Fl., but with no assurance that social distancing regulations will be down by then a decision had to be made before exhibits were shipped in from all over the world.

Posted on November 8, 2019 Light tackle sport with Raritan Bay stripers The west wind was stronger than predicted, and there weren t as many birds as yesterday at the mouth of Raritan Bay when I joined Mark Roy on his Release Me from Raritan Marina this morning, but we soon spotted good marks that allowed us to pick away with school stripers. Vinny Vetere didn t have anyone to join him for monster striper fishing yesterday, so he went out himself on Katfish from Great Kills to try out new colors on his TGT bunker spoons.
