Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, reports improved fluking from his rental boats in Shark River. Lard Smith of Neptune limited with fluke up to 6 pounds, and Marty Westerfield of Wall had three up to 3 1/2 pounds. The Jamaica from Brielle got into blues on top that hit well at some times. Most were 2-to-4-pounders, but the pool winner went 12 pounds. The huge drop-off in Raritan Reach fluking on Monday seems to be reversing. Capt. Stan Zagleski said a series of tankers coming through ruined it on Tuesday, but anglers on his Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands did well during the last two hours as catches ranged up to four keepers. Pat Farley of Point Pleasant took the pool with a 7 1/16-pounder.  Capt. Ron Santee said today was better than Tuesday for fares on his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands. He tried some different areas, and catches ran up to three. The biggest fluke weighed 6.8 and 7.7 pounds. Frank Huza of Aberdeen fished the beach at False Hook without raising any game fish, though he did release six fluke under 12 inches, a sand dab and six big sea robins. He saw the Shore bluefish fleet fishing in Raritan Bay from Flynn's Knoll all the way back to Prince's Bay. Allen Riley of South Plainfield and his crew fished the surf at Monmouth Beach. Unlike yesterday, the bite of small blues wasn't over by dawn, but rather started then for Riley with his Tsunami Talkin Popper as he caught four and lost as many by 8 a.m. The others couldn't interest those blues with metal, but Tony Martino of Ocean Township released a 26-inch striper that hit his metal jig in the wash -- and Dan Brodzinski of Tin Man Tackle used his metal tipped with a Gulp Swimming Mullet for a short fluke and a sun dial. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills nailed a 28-inch striper on a Chug Bug shortly after he started casting in Shark River this morning, and added two smaller ones later on a Zoom jig. Though the bass hit a popper, it only had three small blueclaw crabs in its stomach, one of which was a softshell. Phil Silvester of Belmar caught a small bass on a jig before switching to an SP Minnow that was hit by a 35-inch bluefish which was very skinny. That's the sort of blue that's often seen very early in the season when they're just coming n from the ocean -- but those we caught in the rivers last month were all healthy-looking and well-proportioned fish. I stuck with a popper and never raised a fish. Pete Connell of Avon fished bunker schools out of Shark River Inlet this morning, but never saw a fish caught. Fluking wasn't much better, until he caught a couple of keepers before coming in.
