Captain's Focus

Raritan Bay continues to produce good fluke fishing provided wind and current are in  basically the same direction, and there are no large ships coming through Raritan Reach. At Atlantic Highlands, Sea Tiger II reported a 10 3/4-pound doormat boated on Wednesday's first drift, and Capt. Ron Santee said there was a 10.2-pounder today for Brianna Dustin  of Whippany Park on his Fishermen. She had a limit, and there was also a 7.9-pounder caught today. The Fishermen is chartered Saturday morning. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported "OK" chub mackerel fishing today along with sharks up to 5 feet. Some fluke were caught on the last drift. The Jamaica from Brielle is touting the afternoon fishing fun and fireworks trips that are producing fluke, sea bass and chub mackerel before viewing the fireworks at Jenkinson's in Point Pleasant Beach. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills released three stripers in the 18-inch class that hit his Chug Bug before dark last night, but he couldn't raise anything in Shark River this morning. I used Gulp for fluke in the Bay Head surf this morning, but most of the hits came from eight small sun dials. Just two small fluke were hooked, but I was surprised by a 16-inch sea robin -- the first I've caught in the surf there in two years.  The previous morning I released the fattest 17-inch fluke I ever saw as it must have weighed 3 pounds. At Seaside Park, Grumpy's Tackle noted that brown sharks are hitting bunker chunks in the surf at night. The Seaside docks are producing lots of crabs and blowfish. Betty & Nick's also mentioned that some kingfish are starting to show in the surf.
