Captain's Focus

Catching even a single doormat fluke in a lifetime is an accomplishment for most fluke anglers, but Danielle O'Brien of South Bound Brook is well on her way to becoming among the best female flukers in history as she boated her second of the season today on Elaine B. II  from Bahrs in Highlands. That 10 1/8-pounder was the seventh doormat of the season on Elaine B. Capt. Stan Zagleski said they did well despite a wind against tide situation as catches ran up to four.  The Jamaica from Brielle reported their Saturday night trip produced small bluefish plus chub mackerel, as most were caught on bait plus a few on jigs. Francisco Romero of Jersey City took the pool with a 3.5-pound blue. Sunday's trip resulted in about 100 small blues along with 30 to 40 mackerel a person. Surprisingly, it was an unusually large 3-pound chub mackerel that won the pool for Karly Morris of Maple Shade. Jiggers did best with blues. Bob Matthews, at  Fishermen's Den in Belmar Marina, weighed a 9 11/16-pound fluke from offshore for Vince Russo of Ewing. Shark River fluking has also been good. Ryan Degraw of Wall had the 6 1/2-pounder noted here last night. Other large river fluke were a 4 3/16-pounder by Charles Wardell, and a 4 5/16-pounder for Charlie Lemaire. I cast into Shark River early to catch a small bluefish on a small Yo-Zuri Atom popper and raised a couple of other fish. After moving to Bay Head for fluke, I didn't even get my feet wet as I could see that the beach was covered with weed.
