Captain's Focus

The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported "super" chub mackerel fishing on bait today, with anglers catching from 40 to 60 along with a few pound-size bluefish and some sea bass. Capt. Stan Zagleski reported a gusty south wind produced difficult drifting conditions for his Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands, but managed to put together a catch.  Andy Hegedus of Concord, Ca., Rick Siegmund from Slatington, Pa., and Tiny Goldman of Brick all had identical 5-pound, 1-ounce fish which made for a three-way tie of the pool.  Capt. Vinny Vetere, of Katfish Charters from Great Kills, said the weather was beautiful, but striper fishing was picky. Yet, the party caught six from 10 to 19 pounds plus smooth dogfish. Casting in Shark River was slow again this morning, but I hooked a 22-inch striper that was my only shot on a Yo-Zuri Atom popper. Phil Silvester had his only popper hit get off, but switched to a shad to release a small bluefish. Vinnie D'Anton had no luck in the river, but moved to the Belmar surf to release a couple of small bass on his Chug Bug.  I moved to the Bay Head surf, and was happy to find that the seaweed had disappeared. I caught an Island Beach State Park limit in the wrong place with very fat fluke of 16 1/2 and 17 inches. Yet, those releases were it, with only one other bump and not even the sun dials that had been abundant.
