Captain's Focus

Capt. Bob Pisano's ashes were spread today into Mud Hole waters near the scene of his biggest triumphs with giant tuna as his wife Candi, relatives and many friends sailed offshore on the Fin-Ominal from Belmar Marina. There'll be more about this in Friday's column. We weren't far from where the bluefish fleet was having a great day with small blues plus chub mackerel. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported "all you want" jigging and bait fishing -- and there were similar reports from the Jamaica out of Brielle and the Queen Mary from Point Pleasant. Capt. Stan Zagleski said he had wind and tide together most of the day on his Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands as anglers did pretty well with fluke despite a lot of boat traffic. Tom Hollywood Sr. of Staten Island just missed out on a doormat with a personal best 9 11/16-pound fluke, and John Vandestad of Pompton Lakes boated a a 6 5/16-pounder. The Raritan Bay Anglers Charity Fluke Tournament was contested today, but no results have been posted. However, Dave Lilly of Hazlet said he heard of a couple of doormats being weighed. Lilly said he had a great day with a volume of legal fluke, but nothing over 5 or 6 pounds. He has another day to find the big one during Sunday's second day of the Sandy Hook Bay Anglers Fluke Tournament. Capt. Tommy Joseph reported another great day of porgy fishing on his Rightaway III from Shark River. Vinny D'Anton found too much weed in the Spring Lake surf this morning, but moved over to Sea Girt to release a 24-inch striper on a Chug Bug. Capt. Phil Dulaine was one of those watching his mentor's ashes disappear in the Mud Hole today. He said he trolled a large school bluefin at the Bacardi this week, but got word this morning that there was a mob scene out there today. He's looking forward to taking the Canyon Runner far east to Babylon Canyon on Sunday in search of better water.
