Captain's Focus

By far the hottest fishing in the area now has been the offshore jigging and bait fishing for small blues plus chub mackerel that have been building up the last couple of years. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported some fares had well over 100 fish today. The Jamaica from Brielle had a similar report today, and also got into the same sort of action on the Saturday night trip. A 5-pound pollock won today's pool. A Wednesday night sailing has been added for from 7:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Capt. Ron Santee reported a slow drift for anglers on his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands, but the fluke were hungry. The Prowler V from that port reported 20 keeper fluke on its first drift this morning. Though the Raritan Bay Anglers Fluke Tournament was held on Saturday, I haven't been able to get any official results so far. They will be published when available., along with the Sandy Hook Bay Anglers Two-Day Fluke Tournament that ended at 5 p.m. Vinnie D'Anton of Shark River Hills managed to hook an 18-inch striper on his Chug Bug at Spring Lake this morning, before releasing a 22-incher at Sea Girt. The surf was beautiful there, but I couldn't raise anything to my popper -- and then was also shut out while using Gulp for fluke.
