Captain's Focus

Charlie Parker's Sienna Lee from Highlands took Saturday's Point Pleasant Elks Fluke Tournament when Neil Pisane, also of Oceanport, boated a 10.6-pound doormat. They were also in the Grandpa Savino Tournament at Great Kills, and made a wild ride there to check in for the two-fish Calcutta only to barely miss out as they only had a 4-pounder to match with the doormat. Bob McCormack of Belmar fished on Parker Pete to take second in the Elks with a 9.4 pounder, and Larry Valdez of Toms River was third at 9.1 pounds. Bob Wolowitz of Point Pleasant Beach was fourth at 8.3 pounds, and added the Elks member award. Fifth went to Bill Lammiers of Point Pleasant with an 8.2-pounder on Ono Mahi Ahi. Nick Naperski of Point Pleasant was fifth at 7.9 pounds, followed by Brandon Cannoli of Brick on Barb Gail with a 7.8-pounder. Andrew Kline of Jackson took the youth prize with a 5-pound fluke. Bob Purcel of the Elks noted that Ed Smith of Deptford won the Kayak Division with a 21-3/4-inch fluke. Second went to Diane Dixon of Freeport, N.Y. with a 20-incher, and Justin Scharaldi of Manalapan took third with a 19-inch fluke. For the longest three fluke total,  Chris Baggot of Shark River Hills won with 60.5 inches, ahead of John White of Ocean Township with a total of 57.25 inches and Charlie Labar of Philadelphia at 54.75 inches. The prize for most caught species went to Baggott. Vinny D'Anton, Phil Silvester and I had to make a quick retreat from shore fishing in Shark River at dawn. D'Anton released three small blues on his Chug Bug before we left and just made it back to our cars before a downpour. At least there was some nice weather later, but my son Mike drove back from doing an Ironman Triathlon in Lake Placid in stormy weather all the way south. Capt. Ron Santee got his fluke trip in with the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands, and reported good action with a high hook of four to 7 5/16 pounds.
