Captain's Focus

Capt. Percy Wentworth, best known for his Percy cast nets, proved his fishing credentials by finding a 35-pound striper while fishing live bunkers n the depths of the East River on a crew trip with Capt. Vinnie Vetere on Katfish Charters from Great Kills. Vetere said water temperatures in Hudson River were 84 degrees, and his usual spots were devoid of fish. He caught a couple of bass in the 20-pound class in 75-foot depths. Fluking conditions were good in the channels due to a drift in deep waters that wasn't too fast. Capt. Stan Zageski said  he had some limits on Elaine B II from Bahrs in Highlands as Kevin Kely of Parlin took the pool with a 5-pounder. Capt. Ron Santee got off to a great start on his Fishermen from Atlantic Hghlands as a young lady boated a fluke just under 8 pounds. Bucktailing was best in the lack of current, and some limits were taken. Capt. John Kolias, of Reel Fun at Twin Lights Marina in Highlands, couldn't find the volume of large fluke Sunday he got into the previous day, but the Justn Vogali party was happy with the 7- and 8-pound fluke boated in deep waters. The Golden Eagle from Belmar got into some blues early on Run-Off Hammered jigs, and added some fluke to 5 pounds and sea bass in the afternoon. The Jamaica from Brielle got into loads of chub mackerel plus some sea bass on Sunday. Ashton Pelton of Clayton, De. won the pool with a 4-pound sea bass. That fishing was repeated today along with a couple of fluke.  The Gambler from Point Pleasant has had fair fluke fishing, but it was better Sunday morning when Ralph Rivera of Brick had a 5-pounder. Jennifer Bassora of Bloomfield had three keepers on the afternoon trip. Joanne Juniak took the monthly pool lead the previous weekend at 7.3 pounds. The Thursday night wreck trip was slowed by rough seas, and produced more sea bass than ling. Mike Malpass of Brick jigged 40 squid up to 8 inches. Jeff Merrill reports that entries for the upcoming MidAtlantic Tournament at the satellite port in Ocean City, Md. have been closed at 85.
