Captain's Focus

Two species that had been hard to come by lately have returned. Adam La Rosa reports his Canyon Runner fleet got back into bigeye tuna Monday night with multiple catches being the norm. Best of all, bigeyes were caught in three canyons that night. Unfortunately that was after the White Marlin Open when Canyon Runner couldn't find a big money bigeye, but went one of two releases on blue marlin hits, and five of 10 on white marlin. La Rosa noted that a last minute opening for a Friday to Saturday canyon trip has come up. He'll take individual reservations if the boat isn't chartered. Call 732 272-4445. The Golden Eagle from Belmar finally got into solid small blues. It was limit jigging with Run-Off Hammered jigs and teasers which lasted all day. The blues were in the 1-to-2-pound class. There's an occasional much bigger blue in Shark River. After missing a smaller one this morning, I got lucky with a 6-to-7-pounder from shore on a Stillwater Popper that really put on a show with seven jumps several feet out of the water before it was released. Phil Silvester of Harrison released a 3-pounder on a plastic jig. Even that one would have been a pool winner on a bluefish party boat. Northern party boats reported good fluking today. Capt. Stan Zagleski said it started up quickly in the ocean before the south wind that killed the drift. Catches ranged up to four keepers on Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands. Capt. Ron Santee fished the ocean with his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands for fluke up to 7 pounds. Jigging was best before the wind came up, and 6-inch Gulp were best after that. The Fishermen isn't sailing Thursday night, and is chartered Friday morning.
