Captain's Focus

The computers really missed the storm forecast -- or we really got lucky as it moved further offshore. The forecast of high winds noted in last night's blog never occurred, as there was only a breeze as I caught short blackfish up to 14 inches this morning in Point Pleasant Canal. There was very little boat traffic for a Labor Day weekend, though conditions were fine for fishing Manasquan River or Barnegat Bay. Despite the lack of wind, the ocean was rough -- and that will be the case for some time. The Cock Robin from Point Pleasant cancelled trips through Tuesday, but is planning to fish on Wednesday when light winds are forecast. The new forecast calls for only 24-29 mph north winds tonight (though it's very light as this was being written), and 22-25 mph on Labor Day with gusts to 36 plus a 30 percent chance of showers after 11 a.m. By Tuesday it should be down to 16 to 21 mph from the north. Bob Matthews reports from Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina that the fluke in Shark River are moving closer to the inlet. The last big fluke he weighed before the storm was a 8 5/8-pounder caught off Asbury Park by Robert Kwiatkowski from Ewing. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills reports there was nothing doing from shore in Shark River during Friday and Saturday mornings, and the one angler ho tried there this morning also didn't raise anything
