Captain's Focus

There have been no hot reports so far, but a few boats got out today to give fishing a try after the tropical storm. Tank Matraxia and his friends from Lyndhurst plus Capt. Lou Grazioso fished aboard a Cobia from Keyport that was all over Raritan Bay before doing best right outside the harbor with both fluke and a shot of 2-pound blues. Matraxia caught two of the four keeper fluke taken, and they barely made legal size . He also only put five ALS tags into short fluke as the channels were pretty dead with only a few sea robins and dogfish in the mix. The Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands got out Thursday and found a few keeper fluke, but no shorts as all the bait readings were hanging above the roiled bottom. A boater I talked to at Castaway's Tackle in Point Pleasant this morning noted that small blues were hitting fluke rigs being reeled up in 80-foot depths to the north yesterday. The Golden Eagle from that port got into blues from 1/2-to-2-pounds today. It was mostly singles as the pick lasted all day. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills worked Shark River hard this morning, but didn't raise anything and saw less bait than the previous morning. He also checked the beach, and noted that the storm had created some good cuts even though nothing was raised. Allen Riley of South Plainfield and his crew worked the Monmouth Beach surf to no avail, but at 8 a.m. they did see a brief shot of what appeared to be little tunny hitting bait not too far offshore. There was also some bait, including mullet along the shore. Joe Melillo reported continued good blackfishing in Point Pleasant Canal on the green crabs he has in stock at Castaway's Tackle. One customer landed a 17 1/2-incher yesterday while catching loads of shorts. Chris Di Stefano heard that boaters who rushed out to Hudson Canyon today in hopes of getting back into the hot pre-storm tuna bite were disappointed, but they got word of white marlin hitting in Toms Canyon.
