Captain's Focus

The sudden run of big blues and little tunny continued today. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported better fishing than on Saturday, with lots of blues up to 18 pounds on bait plus a high hook on tunny of 15 plus a few bonito. Scott Leadbeater of Haddon Heights fished Raritan Bay on Friday with his center console from Atlantic Highlands to get into surface action with blues among the numerous peanut bunker schools. Most were 1 to 3 pounds, but a few much larger were mixed in. He then drifted in Sandy Hook Bay and caught short fluke before a 21-incher was hooked.  The Ocean Explorer from Belmar reported a pick of fluke in the ocean today that included a 9.2-pounder. Capt. Ryan Bogan reported he's been catching fluke with Jamaica II from Brielle since the storm in 70 to 100-foot depths. The monthly pool leader is only 6 pounds, though 7-pounders have been caught by anglers not in that pool. Both Bruce Casagrande of Trenton and Frank Pogue had fluke limits up to 5 pounds last week. Some big porgies plus bluefish are also being caught.
