Captain's Focus

Though the Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands doesn't switch to striped bass fishing until Saturday, Capt. Rob Semkewyc had a Friday charter that produced just what he'll be fishing for. The day started with jigging for small blues and weakfish, but then birds started working on all stripers. The bass were hard to interest in jigs, but they picked mostly one to three a drift. The final tally was 13 legal stripers plus 20 shorts released. The Sea Hunter sails daily from 7:30 to 2:30. The Golden Eagle from Belmar marked lots of jumbo bluefish, but only picked at choppers to 20 pounds. Bait was best, though Run-Off Hammered jigs worked later on.  This week's canyon trip produced some dolphin plus a shot of 50-to-60-pound yellowfin tuna at night that resulted in several being boated. There's room on the Oct. 23 canyon trip. Miss Belmar Princess marked lots of blues during a rough trip in the gusty north wind. The bite improved later in the trip, and the pool went to a 21-pounder.  Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, reported that dock fishermen are  catching up to four legal winter flounder a tide, but can keep only two. Capt. Chris Di Stefano of Wall fished aboard Frank Criscola's  new 30-foot North Rip (hull number 2) on Wednesday. After trolling a good catch of stripers there early in the week, they only had one shot for a double of 15-pounders on an umbrella rig.  Those were the only bass caught in the fleet that day, and it's been no good the last two days.  Di Stefano heard about a bite of big bass off Barnegat earlier in the week, but Tony Arcabascio hasn't been able to confirm that. Di Stefano said the canyon albacore bite continues. but there's only been a few yellowfins on the chunk at night. Allen Riley sent along a Wednesday surf report from Frank Huza of Aberdeen who took the long walk to the tip of Sandy Hook where he saw about 15 tunny caught around 8 a.m. Huza caught two of about 3 and 6 pounds by blind casting a Manno 1-ounce Silver  jig -- and saw something amazing -- a small dolphin (fish) chasing bait at his feet. The surf was very rough when I tried casting a popper at Spring Lake this morning. Shore native Mike Monte was the only other angler casting, and he too did nothing before returning to Nantucket in the afternoon.  Leif Pettersen had a striper blow-up on a black Snake fly at Deal, but no other action. There was better news at Seaside Park. Betty & Nicks reported stripers are being plugged at night, and there's been a run of kingfish at the south end of Island Beach State on salted clams. Grumpy's Tackle noted the continuing run of small blues on bait, but also had the first weigh-ins in weeks. Polish Al beached a 33-inch, 13.95-pound striper on mullet, and Dave Trimble plugged a 35-inch, 14.2-pound bass.
