Captain's Focus

Though yesterday's striped bass report from the Sea Hunter out of Atlantic Highlands was encouraging, striped bass still haven't really started their fall run off the Shore. The water temperature remains relatively high at 66 degrees, The school bass Capt. Rob Semkewyc found Friday were in the back of Raritan Bay, but they weren't there this morning. Later in the morning he found some very small blues, but only bailed out on his last stop in Sandy Hook Channel when a few scratches on the fishfinder produced six stripers on jigs despite the roaring full moon current. Semkewyc noted that there were no positive reports from down the beach or to the east. He knew that some rolling schoolies came up very far back in the bay, but were so fussy that the boat that was into them gave up trying to get a hit. Capt. Chris Di Stefano of Wall reported that there was no bite at Shrewsbury Rocks again, but he knew that canyon boats were still into a hot albacore trolling bite. The jumbo bluefish bite at Shark River Reef continued today. The Golden Eagle reported everyone caught the blues which ran up to 20 pounds. Bait was best, but Run-Off Hammered jigs worked later in the day. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant had a similar report for blues up to 18 pounds. At Atlantic Highlands, the Fishermen had to make several drops to catch porgies, but found a spot that also produced six big winter flounder, blackfish up to a 20-incher, and blowfish.  Prowler 5 reported a good porgy catch plus the one blackfish per person presently allowed. Mike Koblan and friends from Wall fished Shrewsbury for blackfish on Chet Davenport's Good Call from Manasquan. Eric Olsen, Chris Minieri and Nick Curcio helped catch seven tog as four up to 7 pounds were kept. The big swell continued to make surfcasting difficult. I tried Spring Lake as the sun came up. Three anglers were waking off after having done nothing. It was barely possible to work a popper, and I had to stand on dry sand to avoid getting beat up by the waves. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant was busy selling green crabs to anglers getting into the sure bite fishing for mostly short blackfish in Point Pleasant Canal, and also had word of lots of short stripers in Manasquan River.
