Captain's Focus

Even though water temperatures remain a bit too high for the striped bass migration, more boaters are moving into that fishery. The Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands starts striper fishing Wednesday morning, and the Sea Hunter from that port resumes that sport after sitting out the worst of the northwest wind. Working birds were spotted today, and the wind is supposed to drop off somewhat tomorrow. Vinny D'Anton of Wall started in the Spring Lake surf at dawn, but moved to Manasquan where his Chug Bug produced bass of 23 and 27 inches. I didn't do nearly that well at Bay Head, as the only hit on my Tactical Anglers Bomb Jr. popper was from a mere 15-inch striper. Joe Melillo got away from his Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant to hook some hickory shad in the Bay Head surf. There had been lots of both small blues and hickory shad in that surf the previous evening, but the rainfish that had attracted them weren't thick this evening. Bob Correll of Bay Head followed some feeding fish that came in a few times, but said they were only very small blues. Allen Riley of South Plainfield saw bait, but no predators at Monmouth Beach this morning. Bob Matthews reports from Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina that Ron Anderson weighed a 34-pound striper caught on Rita Too from Belmar. Capt. Ryan Bogan reported some sea bass limits up to 4 pounds Monday on Jamaica II from Brielle along with some porgies and triggerfish. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission will be trying Wednesday to break the six tied votes relating to the menhaden quota at the last meeting.
