Captain's Focus

The Miss Belmar Princess reported a big change in fishing today, as stripers were scarce but jumbo bluefish moved in from the deep waters where they had been located to crash on bunkers inshore. Blues up to 17 pounds were boated. That boat is moving up its sailing time to 7 a.m. The Golden Eagle from Belmar also reported jumbo blues on Run-Off Hammer jigs plus a few stripers.  Surfcasting in the Ocean County surf was poor again, and there weren't even any hopeful signs from the boats looking for bunkers. I joined John Green again as he drove from Lavallette to Seaside without ever seeing a bent rod or any sign of bunkers. The way the boats were moving around, it appeared they were only finding mall schools. Capt. Dave De Gennaro ran an afternoon trip with his Hi Flier from Barnegat and found only one school of bunkers north of the inlet with other bots on them but no bass being caught. There was some very good news from offshore, as Capt. John Olinsky returned from Toms Canyon after an overnighter with his Inspiration from Toms River after having trolled a 90-pound yellowfin tuna before chunking at night for five 30-to-40-pound yellowfins and swordfish of 150 and 250 pounds. A smaller sword was released.
