Captain's Focus

The weather couldn't have been any better for a Nov. 8, but striped bass fishing results were mixed. Capt. Rob Semkewyc of the Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands said the stripers won the day in Raritan Bay as only one was boated despite a lot of searching.     Chuck Many of Annandale got off to a good start while loading up with bait in the back of Raritan Bay with his Ty Man from Gateway Marina in Highlands as Nellie Greer from Bethlehem Pa. released two stripers up to 25 pounds using the snag & drop technique while Many and I had several bass on-and-off. As the boat traffic got heavier and the bunker scattered, Many ran up to the East River were we had to work hard for a few hits. I was happy with that as one of my three bass released there on live bunkers during the change of tide weighed 32 pounds on Many's IGFA-certified Boga Grip.  The bite seemed to die on the flood, and a call from Johnny Bucktails drew Many back to Raritan Bay where birds were working during mid-day and Many released a 29-inch striper on his first cast with a Tsunami Shad. That was the last we saw of the feeding flurry, but we ended up a short day with a dozen bass releases. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported bass were swimming around the boat at times during a beautiful day, but only a few were caught on Run-Off Hammer jigs and Crocs. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant was delighted with the weather, and the pool striper was a 43-incher.
