Captain's Focus

Capt. Rob Semkewyc said there seems to be more bait and more stripers in Raritan Bay every day -- and today anglers on his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands also got their first good shot at jumbo blues in the bay. The Golden Eagle from Belmar had tough morning fishing, but got a shot at stripers on bait in the afternoon. That boat will not be sailing on Thanksgiving. I checked the surf from Sea Girt to Bay Head this morning, but didn't cast as it was rough and off color. In the afternoon, I drove up to Monmouth Beach where I put out the fire. Pat Brennan was just before me and saw fish in the wash -- shouting for me to get my gear. I got down to the surf just in time to see the last bass caught. The surf there was very fishable, but nothing was raised after the brief flurry. John Mazzeo of South Plainfield fished the Sea Bright surf from dawn to 11 a.m. and was able to snag peanut bunkers. He fished them in every way, but couldn't hook up. The only bass he saw caught was on a Hopkins Shorty.   The Jamaica from Brielle opened its far offshore wreck season successfully over the weekend. There were lots of jumbo sea bass plus porgies and even a few cod. Those trips will be run by reservation at 11 p.m. every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
