Captain's Focus

Gale warnings are up as of 7 p.m. Saturday for NW winds up to 40 mph throughout Sunday. As a result, most party boats have cancelled Sunday trips. Check first before coming down. Monday may also be a blowout. Ocean fishing for bass wasn't too impressive. The Golden Eagle from Belmar found none before going offshore to jig blues to 15 pounds on Run-Off Hammer jigs. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported some slots, keepers and shorts at the end of the day.  Capt. Russ Binns trolled his Mar-Lin from Toms River right up to 5 p.m., and had his best shot late in the day when some birds started working on rainfish as a few bass and blues hit bunker spoons -- including a 20-pound striper. Raritan Bay started as poorly as on Saturday, but Capt. Rob Semkewyc stayed in the back of the bay despite only having one short jigged and another lost all morning on his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands. When the tide changed there were a few stripers jigged before that bite died. Then there were suddenly birds everywhere as big blues appeared out of nowhere, and everyone had action. Capt. Ron Santee had just two stripers early before also getting getting into the big blues at the end of his trip with the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands.  Capt. Stan Zagleski said blackfishing improved from Friday, with some limits boated on his Elaine B II from Bahrs in Highlands. There didn't seem to be any life in a surprisingly rough low tide surf at Bay Head this morning, and I ended up joining John Green in his beach buggy at Lavallette. He said there had been some fish in the surf earlier at Brick Beach, but they wouldn't hit, and it was impossible to work a popper under the rough conditions. Nothing developed before we left. That NW wind should flatten the surf and provide long casts by Sunday morning. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park only had one weigh-in after quite a few bass and blues went to the scale the previous two days.
