Captain's Focus

Dave Lilly of Hazlet said he couldn't get away from 8-to-13-pound bluefish today from Sandy Hook to Monmouth Beach. Perhaps we're headed for a repeat of last year's December fishing off Sandy Hook with great popper action on jumbo blues. Lilly said the water temperature was only 48 degrees --a big change from the 53 degrees recorded Wednesday down the beach on Ty Man, after it was only 43 degrees in Sandy Hook Bay. On the other hand, the Golden Eagle from Belmar reported more stripers than blues, including some from 35 to 39 inches as swim shads were most effective. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant had a good day with stripers from 24 to 32 inches. The high hook caught nine up to 31 inches. There were some great striper blitzes on Thanksgiving afternoon for those who could get to the beaches. That was especially the case for Jerry Lasko of Point Pleasant who got into bass on the wash around dusk at Normandy Beach. He had hits on every cast, and one of the bass was weighed in this morning in Castaways Tackle, Point Pleasant at 27 pounds. Lasko lost a hefty bass there at daylight, but the bite ended very quickly. As has usually been the case, there was no repeat of the evening bite there today. Joe Blaze of Brielle walked into a mass of stripers on a huge school of peanut bunkers Thanksgiving afternoon at Sea Girt and caught lots of them on his fly rod while putting a friend into his first stripers with a spinning rod and a plug. Yet, Jay Amberg reported there was no sign of stripers there this morning even though peanuts were there. He even tried snag & drop without a hit. Blaze was back for the afternoon bite, but that too never developed. He checked up to Asbury Park without finding anything but surfcasters waiting for bass to show.
