Captain's Focus

Saturday was generally a tough one for those seeking striped bass. Perhaps it was a drop in water temperature or a move by peanut bunkers to the south. Surfcasters were all over the beaches, but I didn't get any reports -- and Grumpy's in Seaside Park only had a few weigh-ins topped by a 34.5-inch, 14.6-pounder on an SP Minnow by Eric Willson. Capt. Rob Semkewyc was very disappointed to find fussy stripers when he finally got into one big area of birds. His anglers on the Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands did best in bunker schools, but blues dominated. The boat ended up with one keeper bass, a short, and 12 to 15 blues. Here is a pic of the lone striper The Golden Eagle from Belmar went south and made long drifts over good readings that produced few bites as they had a pick of more bass than blues. Swim shads worked best. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported a good start that failed to develop. The high hook caught three bass as 6-to-9-inch swim shads and gold diamond jigs were most effective. The Cock Robin from that port reported that Friday produced their best day of the fall on swim shads. Capt. Stan Zagleski reported an improvement in the blackfish bite after a tough Friday bite in poor anchoring conditions -- though Bill Higginson of Flemington boated a 9-pound pool winner on Elaine B II from Bahrs in Highlands.
