Captain's Focus

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) is discussing recreational fishing specifications for summer flounder, scup and black sea bass this afternoon in association with the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council during the latter's meeting in Baltimore. In order to comply with the latest quota reduction, it may be necessary to reduce the fluke regs to just two at a 19-inch minimum plus a shortened season. The JCAA and other groups are calling for status quo until a new baseline assessment is finished as it appears the population is actually in very good shape. They are supported in that position by Rep. Frank Pallone and Senator Cory Booker who have written to NOAA Fisheries asking them to hold off on the new quota. Look for the results of these meetings in tomorrow's blog. Though party boats have given up on them, and there's some brutally cold weather coming, striped bass are still in the picture. Capt. Vinny Vetere just concluded his season with Katfish Charters in Great Kills without having to make good on his no fish, no pay guarantee. He said the bass have been feeding on squid, and trolling Mo-Jos was the key to success with 20 to 30 bass up to 36 pounds. He ended up with about 100 eels that will have to be released. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reports small bass have been hitting small plugs and teasers in the surf at sundown. There haven't been any weigh-ins in some time. Jay Amberg said fly rod pro Bill Massey released six small stripers this morning in the Manasquan surf. Small bait was spotted here. Stephen Sautner noted that his 11-year-old son had fun Saturday morning releasing some of the small bass that were chasing peanut bunkers in the Long Branch surf.
