Captain's Focus

The N.J. Outdoor Alliance and the Greater Point Pleasant Charter Boat Association are trying to get as many anglers down to Baltimore for Monday's Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council meeting (at 3:30 to 5 p.m.) on the state's request for Special Management Zones on the 13 artificial reefs in federal waters in order to keep commercial gear off the reefs created almost entirely with angler and diver funds. Commercial interests are making a late push to prevent that. The NJOA and GPPCBA are picking up the fuel and toll costs of those participating in the car pool. Contact Capt. Pete Grimbilis at 973 454-0315. Though Capt. Jim Freda reported getting into school stripers from his boat on Saturday, the Golden Eagle from Belmar had no such luck today and is shutting down until after Christmas when mackerel may be on the menu. There have been some surf reports of small stripers during the last few days, but Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park hasn't had any recent weigh-ins. Jay Amberg got into some bass up to a 25-incher on Friday, but said it's been dead at Manasquan and Sea Girt since then. A friend trolled rigs at Shrewsbury Rocks to catch stripers of 24 to 31 inches that were feeding on sand eels and herring. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, reports Hunter Schlegel released a 15 1/4-pound trophy blackfish that he caught on Fish Stix. The Jamaica from Brielle had another fine offshore wreck trip with many limits of jumbo sea bass on Saturday. Mr. Melnick from East Brunswick won the pool with a 7-pound sea bass to beat out a 6-pounder. The Jamaica has room on the Tuesday night trip. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations.
