Captain's Focus

Blackfishing has been holding up nicely so far, and should be a good bet for Christmas Eve anglers. Capt. Stan Zagleski had a good start once again with his Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands, but it got tougher in more current when the tide turned. There was plenty of action, but not enough keepers to please the skipper. He'll be back at it in the morning, but will not sail on Christmas. The Ocean Explorer from Belmar had a good day of blackfishing that included some limits. The Gambler from Point Pleasant ran off 70 miles on Thursday to load up with sea bass and porgies plus a few big ling. Dogfish weren't much of a problem. Bill Roha of Whippany had a sea bass limit plus 35 porgies, a bluefish and a small pollock. The pool went to Bob Sheppard of Lakewood for a 5.5-pound sea bass. Capt. Bobby Bogan has room on those far offshore wreck trips on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. They're limited to 35 fares at $250. Call 732 295-7569 for reservations. The Dauntless from Point Pleasant fished wrecks in 100 feet on Tuesday for porgies, sea bass up to 3 pounds, cod to 8 pounds, and some tog to 5 pounds. Yet, there have been few ling showing so far. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reports some small stripers are being picked in the surf on small plugs by the dedicated.
