Captain's Focus

Capt. Lou Grazioso of Wall had a great time with school stripers in the back of Raritan Bay today while fishing alone this morning, and joining Johnny Bucktails in the afternoon. With water temperatures ranging from 47 to 50 degrees, bass hit on both tides -- as long as the current was running. Technique was critical, as it was basically casting small lures to marks on the fishfinder. Grazioso did best by using his light freshwater bass tackle with a Shimano Curado DE6 reel.  The Tsunami 5-inch shad in pearl white was a hot lure. Grazioso noted that the mostly 24-to-28-inch bass, with some up to 35 inches, were covered with sea lice -- indicating they're fresh in from the ocean. He said trollers were doing very well, but clam chumming hasn't been effective.  Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reported hearing of short stripers hitting clams in the Island Beach State Park surf. There was better news from the blackfish fleet in Belmar. The Big Mohawk had several tog limits and bigger fish hitting both green and whitelegger crabs, while the Ocean Explorer also reported limits of tog and good life on several spots.    This week's weather looks to be generally fishable.
