Captain's Focus

Even after Thursday's bluefish blitz in Manasquan Inlet, today's weather forecast was enough to keep party boats at the dock. The torrential rain even kept shore anglers inside, though Joe Melillo of Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant said some did get into blues in Point Pleasant Canal and Manasquan River. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported that Thursday's high hook kept his bluefish limit out of an incredible 48 caught on jigs and swimmers. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported that everyone aboard yesterday loaded up on blues all the way from 3 to 12 pounds on jigs. The Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands got out Wednesday for a decent pick of keeper and short stripers in Raritan Bay after the tide change plus their first bluefish of the season. At Seaside Park, Grumpy's Tackle reported one of the largest blues so far when Max Kelping weighed a 39-inch, 15.6-pounder Thursday on an SP Minnow. Roger De Grande caught eight choppers up to a 36-inch, 10.55-pounder on poppers. Betty & Nick's Tackle had a 10-pound blue weighed in by an angler who fished bunker off the 14th Ave. Pier, and lost others trying to lift them up.
