Captain's Focus

The long overdue run of big migratory stripers from the south finally turned on, though primarily for trollers so far. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant sent the following report: Well a few Stripers wanted to play today!  Some bass taken on live bunkers to John Lahey's 48" 40 pound pool winner.  We did pick some Blues to 6 pounds on jigs late in the day.  Weather looks nice and calm for Thursday.  Thursday will be the last calm day for a while so COME ON DOWN!!   I saw trollers picking away at bass off the northern Shore this afternoon during a rip with Capt. Erwin Heinrich oh his Scales N Tales out of Twin Lights Marina in Highlands. More about that in tomorrow's blog. The Golden Eagle from Belmar had a good catch of blues from 3 to 10 pounds on jigs and Crocs plus two stripers on "soft swim baits". There were lots of surf bluefish reported by Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park. Most weigh-ins were on bunker, but there were a couple each on bucktails and plugs. They also had big bass weighed in by trollers. Surfcasting for 6-pound class bluefish seemed to turn on Tuesday morning at both Sandy Hook and Sea Bright for anglers fishing bunker chunks. However, Allen Riley of South Plainfield returned to Sandy Hook this morning with John Mazzeo of that town and Duke Matero from Piscataway to only catch one sun dial. There were more surfcasters than on the previous cold morning, but he only saw one 3-pound blue and a short bass caught. I cast a pen raising pencil popper and a Tsunami shad in Shark River early this morning without a hit.
