Captain's Focus

Fishing is fine, but there may not be any opportunity to fish on Saturday if the weather forecast of rain and gale force winds holds up. Party boats have cancelled trips, and even Sunday is questionable at this point. On the positive side, next week is looking good -- and much warmer. Bluefish jigging in the ocean was red hot today. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported up to 20 on at a time, with sizes ranging from 3 pounds up to a 14-pound pool winner by Ken Ford. All the action was on Run-Off Hammer jigs and Crocs. Allen Riley had a good surf report from Sandy Hook as Duke Matero of Piscataway used bunker to release both a fat 34-inch striper and a 26-inch bluefish. My first surfcasting of the season produced more modest results as I hooked a 16-inch striper on a Tsunami 4-inch white shad at Sea Girt. I was lucky to catch that one as I still had the plastic safety covering on the new lure, but the tip of the hook penetrated through the plastic.  Fly fishing pro Bill Massey of Wall aid that was a "big one" as most of the "micro bass" that have been so abundant this year are even smaller. He was doing much better with his flies, and even hooked a 22-incher.     Capt. Russ Binns got into large stripers while trolling bunker spoons north of Manasquan Inlet on Thursday with his Mar-Lin from Toms River. He weighed bass of 39 3/8, 38 and 20 pounds for the Manasquan River Marlin & Tuna Club contest. Binns noted that he never had a hit on mo-jos. At Seaside Park, Grumpy's reported lots of blues and some bass in the surf, while Betty & Nick's had a report of blues to over 40 inches in Island Beach State Park Manasquan Inlet produced a pick of small blues at times today.
