Captain's Focus

Saturday's weather put a big dent in weekend fishing, and it may take another day for everything to settle down. Party boats cancelled trips, but should be back to it by Tuesday as seas will probably settle with northwest winds. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reported there was actually some good bluefishing Saturday in the bay, and on bucktails in the inlet. Jeff Moore had the largest weigh-in with a 37.5-inch blue that was caught on a popper and weighed 14.4 pounds.  The surf was still rough this morning, so I cast a Tsunami shad in Point Pleasant Canal where I lost one small striper. My hands were cold early in the morning, but that shouldn't be a problem the rest of the week. Manasquan River waters were discolored by the rains, and two anglers I talked to as they left the river this afternoon said they'd cast swimming plugs for four hours without a hit. Following is the latest report from Matt Slobodjian at Jim's Tackle in Cape May: " The drumfish bite remains good in the Bayshore Channel off of the Villas and North Cape May. It did slow down a little towards the end of the week, maybe due to the 5 degree water temp. drop in the bay. This week the weather is looking a bit warmer and the bite should come on a little stronger. There are still some nice bass coming from the flats from Bidwells Ditch up into the Cove. There were quite a lot of skates torturing anglers there earlier in the week, but it sounds like they thinned out a lot on the weekend and let the guys catch a few. Arden Jones III of Manheim Pa. caught a 47"- 34lb bass on bunker just above Bidwell's. There are still big bluefish around in good numbers in the surf and in the backwaters. We're starting to see some in the 3-4lb range showing up also. We weighed in some good sized bass coming  from the surf in North Cape May and Cape May Point. Not seeing s lot of action from the beaches in town yet. Just a few so far. We've heard of some more weakfish caught from the sea wall in North Wildwood. We also talked to some of the Coast Guard guys who have started catching a few from the inlet rock pile. Some of these fish were caught bucktailing  and some were on bloodworms. We talked to a local crabber who said the crabs in the bay are just now starting to shed. In a week or two there should be shedders available for bait. Crabbing has been very good." @@
